Permitted Products for SCRAM CAM®

DUI clients know they are not allowed to drink alcohol while wearing the SCRAM Continuous Alcohol Monitoring® (SCRAM CAM®) bracelet—but what about using products that contain trace amounts of alcohol—like mouthwash or perfume? It’s important to know which products are permitted for use while wearing SCRAM CAM to avoid any potential tamper or drinking alerts.

Which Products Can Participants Use While Wearing SCRAM CAM?

Under no circumstances are SCRAM CAM participants allowed to drink alcohol while wearing the bracelet and should avoid consuming any food or drink that could contain enough alcohol to raise their BAC. However, products such as cold medicine and mouthwash are acceptable to use per the product instructions, as long as a participant does not ingest enough alcohol to lead to intoxication.

While the SCRAM CAM bracelet is sophisticated enough to distinguish between environmental (non-ingested) alcohol and ingested alcohol, participants should avoid any hygiene or personal products, like lotions, colognes, and perfumes, that contain alcohol, especially on areas near the bracelet.

Additional Considerations for Clients Wearing SCRAM CAM

SCRAM CAM participants need to avoid getting any substance on the bracelet that could damage it, as this could lead to a tamper event. For example, clients should not go spray tanning or completely submerge the bracelet in water—this means no pools, hot tubs, or baths. Participants can, however, clean the area around the bracelet with mild soap and water and gently pat dry.

Participants are permitted to wear any type of clothing as long as nothing comes between the bracelet and the skin; socks should be pulled over or sit below the bracelet. Exercise is permitted, and thick socks or a sweatband can be placed under the bracelet to avoid it bouncing around on the ankle.

If you are currently wearing a SCRAM CAM bracelet and have any questions regarding your monitoring or the use of certain products, please contact your service provider or agency directly.
